Here's the latest on the project, as of 2/2, reported by Rachel Gordon of SF Chronicle:
The California Transportation Commission allocated $364 million Thursday to continue engineering, design work and other planning for the South Bay BART project.
The $4.7 billion project would extend BART into San Jose, Milpitas and Santa Clara, but it has not been fully funded. Backers hope to secure a mix of state, federal and regional money for it.

Bart to San Jose would be great. However, shouldn't Santa Clara fork over a large portion of the money to pay for it? Contra Costa, Alameda, and San Francisco Counties all pay sales tax, property tax, and bond money for Bart, and have for around 30 years. San Mateo had to buy into the system. As a Contra Costa County resident, I certainly do not want to pay for this extension. We can't even get Bart to provide enough parking for the current riders because they don't have money.
I cannot imagine where the 4.5 billion dollars will come from (and by the time it could get built, it will probably cost 9 billion).

BART to San Jose would be very nice. I wonder if a compromise solution could be found that is somewhat cheaper, such as extending VTA light rail to meet up with BART at Warm Springs or Milpitas.
As somebody whose daily commute includes a connection between BART and MUNI Metro, I can say that a well-designed connection with frequent service probably would work.
